The internet was created in the 60's to facilitate communication between researchers in the US Department of Defense. Largely made as a telecommunications tool for educational professionals and scientists looking to share private information with each other, the internet has since became the best public telecommunications technology available. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (another government organization) created this tool, but the internet is not government run. Instead, an organization named the Internet Society develops standards for its use. In the late 1990's, the World Wide Web was devised, greatly increasing the accessibility to the average person. About 50 million people were utilizing this service for private telecommunication needs at this time.

Because one can find articles and documents on any subject imaginable, the internet is the top source for any information you wish to access. Though it was formerly a tool for sharing research, you can find reports on anything you want, from celebrity news to shopping to auctions to books. Because of its ease of use and speed of obtaining information, the web has slowly replaced the demand for libraries, newspapers and magazines for information on trends, resources for research projects and current events.

This increase in demand and in audience facilitated the advancement of new uses for the internet. Many people have heard of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology; this was devised to give a digital voice experience to users at a cost much lower than traditional phone service. Less people, however, have heard of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). It is estimated that there are currently about 15.5 million users of this service, with over half of them being located in Europe.

When cable and satellite programming is sufficient for your needs, why switch to IPTV? There are many reasons. First of all, if you happen to be the type of person who has to be a part of all new advancements in technology and buy the latest and greatest stuff on the market; this is the newest television viewing experience. Even if you aren't the type that had constantly changing needs, IPTV comes with a lower cost and greater value for your money. You won't be restricted to the number of channels you wish to have based on cost; instead you have the flexibility to choose from a huge array of international and domestic channels for less money.

Portability, of course, is the greatest advantage of IPTV. When you pay for cable and satellite programming, you are restricted to viewing this service at home. What do you do when you are on the go? When you travel, you are subjected to the local programming of the area you are in. If you want to access news and channels local to your residence, you are out of luck. When you subscribe to IPTV, you never have to worry about this- you can view any show on any channel, regardless of where your travels take you.
